Melancholia
watercolour paintings and knitted wool, acrylic painted clips, knitting needles

Laura Wotherspoon is an Australian artist based in Brisbane. She utilises the medium of watercolour painting to depict flora, fauna and aquatic life. Her video works explore meditative scenes accentuated with white noise, recorded in isolated bushlands. Laura’s installation work Melancholia consists of watercolour paintings and drawings attached to a long length of baby blue knitting wool, which is still attached to knitting needles. Watercolour acts a form of meditation as does the calming, repetitive motion of knitting. The aim with this work is that the soft inviting materials and imagery will gently introduce the concept of mental illness to viewers and allow them to have a deeper contemplation of the subject.
